A new book by Kristin Reynolds and Nevin Cohen, Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice in New York City, argues that urban agricultural projects focused explicitly on dismantling oppressive systems have the greatest potential to achieve substantive social change. This briefing will bring together leaders working to significantly expand the volume of fruits, vegetables and other foods grown by local farmers that are served in schools, senior centers, daycare programs and other community institutions. We will highlight the importance of institutional feeding programs to local economies and public health, highlight barriers to increasing the volume of local food served in institutions, and identify opportunities to scale up this important movement for the benefit all New Yorkers.

The New York City Food Policy Center at Hunter College released its inaugural class of New York City’s 40 under 40 who are working to transform the food system. The New York City Food Policy Center at Hunter College honorees include policymakers, educators, community advocates, farmers and innovators who are making significant strides to create healthier, more sustainable food environments, and who use food to promote community and economic development.
On March 24th, CFF partnered with Philanthropy New York to host Barbara Turk for a briefing titled NYC’s Food Policy Director on Health, Hunger, and Equity. The conversation covered a wide range of topics including the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact and NYC’s role in it’s development, the 2015 NYC Food Metrics Report, and the inclusion of food in the OneNYC Plan. There was also a robust Q&A with the audience.
